Cataracts, the clouding of the eye's lens can blur vision and is a major cause of blindness. They can cause total blindness if left untreated. The good news is that cataracts are easily treatable, and can be addressed as soon as vision starts to become blurry. If detected early and treated, it can completely prevent blindness. But for millions of people living in poverty throughout Pakistan, lack of access to good healthcare facilities means that even if they are aware that their eyesight is deteriorating, they have no way of receiving the treatment they require. As a result, the cataract progresses and the sufferer becomes blind. At Shifa Foundation, we work with underprivileged communities to give them the gift of sight. Shifa Foundation provides free state-of-the-art treatment services to needy cataract patients at Shifa International Hospital. So far, hundreds of needy patients have been treated free of cost.
