Shifa Foundation's WASH Initiative in Flood-Affected Village Dumano, Umerkot

The devastating flooding in Umerkot district in 2022 had a profound impact on the lives of many, causing destruction to infrastructure and livelihoods. Village Dumano, located 30 kilometers from Tehsil Umerkot, was severely affected, with limited access to basic sanitation, clean water, and hygiene practices. Recognizing the urgent need for assistance, Shifa Foundation, in collaboration with UNICEF, launched the Flood Emergency and Restoration of WASH Facilities project.

Lachman, a 40-year-old woman residing in Village Dumano, faced severe challenges due to the floods. As her sole source of income, farming was severely disrupted, and her home was destroyed. Lachman’s family was in dire straits, fighting for survival. However, after registering with Shifa Foundation, Lachman became a beneficiary of the hygiene kits and safe drinking water provisions.

To promote healthy lifestyle choices and improve hygiene practices, Shifa Foundation conducted sessions on health and hygiene, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and management. Information on safe drinking water and hygiene practices was shared, and hygiene kits, soaps, and jerry cans were distributed. Shifa Foundation’s approach encouraged local communities to come up with their own solutions, utilizing available resources.

Access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation conditions are crucial for rural areas and villages like Dumano, as they prevent waterborne illnesses such as diarrhea, typhoid, cholera, and skin diseases. Through the WASH project, Shifa Foundation played a significant role in providing these essentials and empowering the community to maintain a healthier environment.

Lachman’s family, like many others, now benefits from safe drinking water and has gained essential knowledge about health and hygiene practices. sShifa Foundation’s efforts in Umerkot district have brought critical support and interventions during these challenging times. The positive impact can be seen in the lives of Lachman and other villagers who have benefited from these interventions.

Shifa Foundation’s Flood Emergency and Restoration of WASH Facilities initiative has made a significant difference in the lives of the flood-affected community in Village Dumano. By addressing water, sanitation, and hygiene needs, Shifa Foundation has helped rebuild lives and promote healthier practices. The impact of their work serves as a testament to the importance of WASH interventions during emergencies and difficult times, providing hope and support to those in need.
